Government To Form Institutional Reform Task Team

PETALING JAYA – A special task force on institutional reforms is being formed by the government.

Berita Harian said that Minister of Law and Institutional Reform Azalina Othman Said said the goal of this task force would be to evaluate the proposals before they were given to the Cabinet.

“The task force will also engage with and seek proposals from the public and other parties,” she said.

She stated that the independent law commission would then be free to hire experts in the legal field as well as other fields such as sociology, science, and business to make recommendations to the government on legal reform.

Azalina also assured that the government would continue the previous administration’s death penalty abolition efforts.

Separately, she stated that Putrajaya intended to empower Suhakam by amending the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia Act 1999 to give it more functions and responsibilities.

This was important so that the commission could better promote and protect human rights.

“One of the changes will let Suhakam put people on the commission from different backgrounds who have the right experience and knowledge in human rights,” she said.
