Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg says that Sarawak will open a trade and tourism office in Brunei to strengthen economic ties with the neighbouring country.
The Premier said that the office would open in Bandar Seri Begawan this year if Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei gave his approval.
“I’ve just come back from Brunei, where we had a good meeting. We will improve economic cooperation between Brunei and Malaysia, and Sarawak will be the key.
“I hope the people of Miri can work with the trade office,” he said at a Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Chinese New Year party in Miri on Wednesday (Jan. 25) night.
Abang Johari was part of the group that went to Brunei with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for a two-day visit that ended on Wednesday.
He said that Brunei and Sarawak would work together on things like clean energy, tourism, and halal food.
“A hydro plant is planned between Brunei and Lawas.
He said, “Our CIQ (customs, immigration, and quarantine) complex at Sungai Tujuh will be improved to make it easier for trade and business between Miri and Brunei.”
Abang Johari also told the people of Miri that they should try smart farming to make food for the halal market.
“Products from Brunei can be certified as halal for the Middle East.
“Our trade office will be the point of contact, and the Brunei government will help us get our products on the world market,” he said.
