Malaysia’s parliament speaker said on Monday that Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey, is the “champion of Muslims.”
At a meeting with his Turkish counterpart Mustafa Sentop in Algeria, Dato Johari bin Abdul said, “Erdogan is a person we also admire and envy, and we can say that he is the champion of Muslims.”
Sentop and Abdul talked about how to improve cooperation between the two parliaments at the 17th session of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Member States (PUIC) in Algeria.
Sentop told his counterpart that the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), which was behind the failed coup in Turkey on July 15, 2016, is a threat to national security in the countries where it operates. The relationship between Turkey and Malaysia has been upgraded to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership level.
Sentop said that FETO spreads its activities by making countries less stable. He said that FETO can hide behind structures like educational institutions and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
Sentop said he was happy with Malaysia’s help in the fight against FETO and that he hoped a solution would be found for the schools in Malaysia that are still connected to FETO.
Abdul said that they understand how the FETO works and that they stand with Turkey on this issue.
Sentop also met behind closed doors with the leader of the Algerian National Assembly, Salah Goudjil.
“At our meeting, where we talked about how our parliaments work together, we had a chance to look at the problems that the Islamic world as a whole faces and the PUIC meeting,” Sentop said on Twitter.
